Why Tree Felling and Chipping matter in the Autumn.

Autumn’s a busy time for trees. Summer growth has pushed branches out, wind and rain arrive, and anything heavy, weak or overhanging becomes a risk. If you’ve got a tree that’s outgrown its space, damaged by weather, or simply in the wrong place, felling and chipping can make your garden safer, tidier, and easier to manage before winter.
At MOF Gardens, we carry out safe tree removals and on-site wood chipping across Loughborough and the wider Charnwood area—minimising disruption and leaving your garden clean, usable, and ready for whatever you want next: new planting, lawn, or hard landscaping.
What “done properly” looks like
1) Assessment & plan
We start with a safety check: tree health, lean, crown weight, proximity to fences, sheds, lines, or public areas. Then we plan the safest removal—straight fell (where appropriate) or sectional dismantle.
2) Controlled felling or sectional dismantle
Not every tree can be dropped in one go. In built-up gardens we’ll dismantle it in sections, lowering limbs safely to protect lawns, patios and neighbouring boundaries.
3) On-site wood chipping
All brash and branches are processed through a chipper. You can keep the chips for paths, beds and moisture-retaining mulch (great for suppressing weeds), or we can remove them.
4) Stump options
Flush cut (neat and low) if you’re paving or decking soon.
Stump grinding if you want clear ground for turfing, planting, or a fresh design.
We’ll advise what makes most sense for your space and budget.
5) Full tidy-up
No one wants to be left with a mess. We leave sites clean and safe: raked, swept, and ready.
When you should consider tree removal
Storm damage or dead/dying wood – cracked, hollow or fungus-affected trees become unsafe fast.
Overshadowing or encroachment – too much shade killing lawns; branches over roofs, paths, or parking bays.
Root issues – roots lifting paving, pressing into boundaries, or competing with beds and lawns.
Wrong tree, wrong place – a small sapling that became a giant; species that simply don’t suit the site.
If you’re unsure, ask for an assessment. Not every tree needs felling, crown reduction or selective pruning can sometimes solve the problem. We’ll give you an honest view.

Wood chips: waste or garden gold?
Chipped wood is incredibly useful:
Mulch — helps retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds.
Paths & play areas — a natural, quick-win surface for informal garden routes.
Compost structure — mixed with greener material, chips add bulk and airflow.
Prefer a clear space? We can remove all arisings. Want to keep it circular? We’ll leave you a neat chip pile ready to use.
Stump grinding vs leaving the stump
Stump grinding (most popular)
Clears the ground for new lawn/planting
Stops suckers/regrowth on many species
Reduces trip hazards and makes mowing simpler
Leaving the stump (case-by-case)
Works if you’re building over or using raised beds
Short-term option if you’re undecided on the next design
We’ll recommend the best route based on species, location and your future plans.

Safety, permissions, and being a good neighbor
TPOs & conservation areas: If your tree is protected, you’ll need permission before work. We can advise on the process.
Nest checks: We work outside nesting windows for birds (and always check regardless).
Boundaries & access: We keep everything courteous and controlled, no surprises over fences.
Waste handling: Fully managed. Leave it with us.
Typical project timelines & what to expect
Small tree (garden setting): ½–1 day including chip & tidy.
Medium tree or sectional dismantle: 1 full day.
Large/complex removal: 1–2 days depending on access and constraints.
Add-ons: stump grinding is usually completed the same day or next available slot.
You’ll get clear scheduling, a fair quote, and tidy work., and no mess left behind!
Why choose MOF Gardens (and not DIY)?
Safety first: Proper planning, safe systems of work, and the right kit.
Less disruption: Sectional dismantles protect lawns, patios and neighbours.
All in one: Felling, chipping, removal, and optional stump grinding—handled end to end.
Local team: Based in Charnwood/Loughborough, with quick response for assessments and storm clean-ups.
FAQs (good for SEO & snippets)
Is autumn a good time for tree removal?
Yes. Cooler weather, softer ground and no nesting birds make it a sensible window—especially before winter winds pick up.
Do I need permission to remove my tree?
If it’s covered by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) or you’re in a conservation area, permission is required. We’ll help you check.
What happens to the waste?
We chip branches on site and can leave chips for your garden or remove them. Trunks can be cut to logs if requested.
Do you grind the stump too?
We can. Many clients choose grinding so the area is immediately usable for turf, planting or new layouts.
How much does tree felling cost?
It depends on tree size, access, and complexity (e.g., dismantling vs straight fell). We’ll provide a clear, itemised quote after assessment.
